Flora Europaea the original Linnean specimen annual, 2n=28,56, tetraploid, octoploid mesoxeric to mesic, strictly segetal Palearctic Amarantho-Chenopodion albi, Eragrostietalia, Sisymbrion R87 habitats     This species is said to be the oldest known weed in the history of western Palearctic agriculture, its seeds being found in the grain deposits of an early Neolithic age.
